Artist's Comments

The six seasons of Kakadu is a series of paintings in watercolour, using a variety of techniques. I have lived in Kakadu for 11 years now, and these paintings have been inspired by the changes in the weather and the changes in the people who live here. The names of the paintings have come from Gagadju, which is the language of the traditional owners of the Jabiru region, the Mirrar.
The seasons are distinctly different, and the weather not only prompts conversation, changes in mood, but also reflects the traditional lifestyle of the people who have lived here for thousands of years. I have worked within the realms of western art in creating these reflections, but I have taken the names from the local people. The works are abstract, yet thematic, so they follow through the seasons using a variety of techniques. I have added the months of the years, and the inspiration for the pieces.

Gurrung is the hot build up season, when both temperature and humidity increases. Both days and nights are hot and relief from the rain will not arrive until the rains begin. (October; November) the rain clouds always seem to be just over the horizon. The rain has to be going somewhere, these clouds are too heavy. But it never rains here, and it never rains there, so the people who come from there tell me. The promise of rain is so close, you can nearly smell it. But you can never taste it.
